Well it’s been one year since Amy and I tied the knot. We celebrated this milestone by basking on the beaches of Kona, Hawaii. As I write this post, thinking back to everything that has happened in the last year, I get chills thinking about how we have both changed and have grown even more in love with each other. Hawaii was a perfect setting for our anniversary, particularly the Big Island. The island is one of the most diverse places I have ever visited; containing tropical forests, lava fields, high deserts, and beautiful sandy beaches. (The big island actually has white, black, and green sand beaches) (Also the big island is actually named Hawaii..interesting??)
With a perfect mean temp of 80 degrees and ocean water nearly as warm, it’s probably the closest place to paradise. We spent our time doing various things as horseback riding through the Waipi’o Valley, snorkeling in the clear waters of Captain Cooks Bay, and taking a hella cool copter ride over Mauna Loa (she’s been unhappy for 20+ years!). The trip was amazing and so was this last year.
What’s that you ask? Oh, yeah my point, why the Big Island was a perfect spot for our anniversary? Amy complements me as a person in many different ways that life without her would be, well, incomplete. Without sounding too sappy, thinking back through the year, we have both grown and have been stretched in many positive directions. Just as we have grown, the Big Island is actually growing day by day. There is earth there that is less than a day old. I guess what I’m trying to say in an extremely cheesy metaphorical way is that Hawaii represents us united and the lava is the love that spills out on a daily basis creating a new platform for beautiful things to grow (no we’re not expecting yet - this is a metaphor!). I simply wouldn’t be the same without her, and we have both emerged after this year as different people. This last year has has truly shaped me into a better person, and it wasn’t possible without Amy.
Ok, ok, now that you’ve wiped the tears from your cheek let me conclude with this, basically, if you haven’t been to Hawaii, you need to go. It is an amazing place, with a rich history and a diverse climate that is really hard to beat anywhere on the mainland.
