Only child syndrome

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

Is it because we give him all the doggy toys he wants? That he gets two full size meals on a daily basis? Both meals being the best doggy food that we can afford, and it’s organic. Maybe it’s because we let him sleep in our room? (The cat’s don’t even get that luxury). Our little Odin has apparently become a bully at doggy daycare. We’ve had to take him in twice so we could go on vacation, and both times we get reports that Odin finds little dogs and and steals their toys and tries to pick fights. How can this be? What’s a loving father to do? Does this look like the face of a bully?

Pacific Kid Tot

Ok, I think I’ve nearly got the design complete for my personal site, Pacifickid.com. I hope to have the layout done this weekend and start slicing/dicin it up into CSS/html. I’ve also been working on my own site framework in Perl for this. Got some interesting classes for dbi handling, can’t wait to share.

Ciao

My friend Nate has put together an interesting documentary on church culture in the northwest. He has interviews with people who helped start Ruch community, a little old country church that I grew up in, and also with people in punk rock church communities here in Portland. Dig it

MMmmm What’s Cookin??

Mom's CookinEveryone needs a hobby. I just have more geekier ones than most. So here’s what’s cooking in my oven, mmmmmmmm…

  • Orchardtech.com: This was my consulting/business site until I got employed with real jobs. I would really like to get this updated. Currently have some photoshop candidates, just need to make a decision and get this launched.
  • No more techy posts on loganandamy.com. After being disabled for a year I renewed pacifickid.com. Originally this site was a collaborated effort with a good friend , I think I’m going to convert it into my techy blog. I plan to write my own blogging software, either in Perl or Python (been slowly teaching myself Python).
  • Finish the latest version of my Picture Browser aka Blogan (Blog + Logan) . I think I’m going to ditch CGI::Application and write my own MVC with template toolkit. I have also grown in love with JQuery, plan to exploit that more. This subject deserves a post unto itself.
  • Redesign loganandamy.com. We just need to do a good spring cleaning on this design, it’s 2 years old!
  • Continue to learn guitar

Run Like HellFor those that know me, I’m not a very athletic person. I’ve attempted competitive sports before, but I’ve lacked the needed killer instinct and or God given ability. After years as a sedentary computer programmer, I have managed to pack on a few extra molecules of triglyceride joy. So to get the fat out of my life ( I topped out at 245lbs last Christmas), I’ve began running…. Believe it or not, running has some amazing health benefits, one of them being immediate weight loss. Starting with a goal to complete the Great Columbia crossing, I began running July 4th. After putting my poor dilapidated lipid rich body through a self prescribed training pGreat Columbia Crossingrogram (and with the encouragement of my loving wife), I have knocked over 25 lbs off and now officially weigh in at 218lbs. After running across the bridge, the crazy 10k mentioned prior, I ran like hell in the Portland Run Like Hell 5k. Anyways, I haven’t quite reached my weight goal of 198, but I post this that if this lazy @#!3 can do it anyone one else surely can. Also, a great book which has inspired me further is The Complete Book of Running by the late great James Fixx (trust me, read this, and your life will be transformed).

Blue Hawaiian Anniversary

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

Blue HawaiiWell it’s been one year since Amy and I tied the knot. We celebrated this milestone by basking on the beaches of Kona, Hawaii. As I write this post, thinking back to everything that has happened in the last year, I get chills thinking about how we have both changed and have grown even more in love with each other. Hawaii was a perfect setting for our anniversary, particularly the Big Island. The island is one of the most diverse places I have ever visited; containing tropical forests, lava fields, high deserts, and beautiful sandy beaches. (The big island actually has white, black, and green sand beaches) (Also the big island is actually named Hawaii..interesting??) Big Island Volcano With a perfect mean temp of 80 degrees and ocean water nearly as warm, it’s probably the closest place to paradise. We spent our time doing various things as horseback riding through the Waipi’o Valley, snorkeling in the clear waters of Captain Cooks Bay, and taking a hella cool copter ride over Mauna Loa (she’s been unhappy for 20+ years!). The trip was amazing and so was this last year. Kona SnorkelingWhat’s that you ask? Oh, yeah my point, why the Big Island was a perfect spot for our anniversary? Amy complements me as a person in many different ways that life without her would be, well, incomplete. Without sounding too sappy, thinking back through the year, we have both grown and have been stretched in many positive directions. Just as we have grown, the Big Island is actually growing day by day. There is earth there that is less than a day old. I guess what I’m trying to say in an extremely cheesy metaphorical way is that Hawaii represents us united and the lava is the love that spills out on a daily basis creating a new platform for beautiful things to grow (no we’re not expecting yet - this is a metaphor!). I simply wouldn’t be the same without her, and we have both emerged after this year as different people. This last year has has truly shaped me into a better person, and it wasn’t possible without Amy. Horseback Riding Waipio ValleyOk, ok, now that you’ve wiped the tears from your cheek let me conclude with this, basically, if you haven’t been to Hawaii, you need to go. It is an amazing place, with a rich history and a diverse climate that is really hard to beat anywhere on the mainland.
