Blessed are the laity

It’s politics as usual on capital hill, but it’s more at stake than building the next bridge to nowhwere.

Apparently Bono got the shaft from Democrats for $1 billion dollars in US pledges to fight Malaria and AIDS in Africa. Not sure which is worse the promises made by President Bush or the hypocrisy of congress.
Meanwhile the church Amy and I are attending, Imago Dei, will be sending a team to East Africa to help with various ministries. They’re partnering with an organiziation called Hope is Alive. These people include college students to young professionals with a great heart for humanity. Also a friend of ours from our bible study has been lead to go to Sudan with MedAir. What amazes me is the great risk that these individuals are taking upon themselves to help people they have no personal ties to. If anything it demonstrates the love of Christ and the willingness of regular people to imitate that love.

Our government, national healthcare, reforming social security, winning the Iraq war, winning the war on terror, political promises, technology, or more taxes will never help or save humanity. God uses the common people to be his hands and feet, the least will be first in His Kingdom.

Quote of the Day

Shaping of Things to ComeI am currently reading through the book, The Shaping of Things to Come by Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch. This book has turned upside down my lifelong conceived notions of Christianity and how I view myself as a Christian or as a follower of Christs teachings. I plan to write a throrough review of the book once complete, however here is a quote that I had to share.

“‘For the Romans nascent Christianity was not at all a new religion. It was antireligion. This view was well founded. What the first Christian generations were putting on trial was not just the imperial religion, as is often said, but every religion in the known world. ‘ Christianity is antirelgion, not just another religion competing with all other pretenders to the Way. ”

Now that’s some food for thought, and I have my fireman suit on. ;-)

Peace.

“Experimental groups seeking to engage the Christian faith in a postmodern context will often lack the resources, profile or success record of the Boomer congregations. By definition, they are new, untried, relatively disorganized and fearful of self-promotion. They reject the corporate model of their Boomer forebears, and thus do not appear, according to exsting paradigms, to be significant. But don’t be fooled. Somewhere in the genesis and genius of these diverse groups is hidden the future of Western Christianity. To dismiss them is to throw away the seeds of our survival.” - Gerard Kelly, RetroFuture

I have to say this quote gets me pumped up. Some of the things that the emerging church is doing is quite amazing, and truly revolutionary.

My Emerging Theology

Decided to stir things up on Bob’s Blog. You know the usual, should extra biblical historical context be allowed when trying to practice good exegesis? I appear to take a more exclusive conservative stance, still sorting this one out myself. Bob’s Blog is the daily thoughts of Bob Hyatt, the pastor of Evergreen Community, which is a highly relevant body of believers which I checked out last Sunday. Any church that meets in a pub, well they’re hip with the kids.
