Gorgeous Weekend

Gorge AmphitheatreLast weekend we loaded our car with all our camping gear and headed out on a rock n roll pilgrimage to the Gorge Amphitheatre to commune with other devote followers at the holy Sasquatch festival. For those who are not yet practicing believers of the alternative music scene, please enlighten yourself at the altar of wikipedia. Overall it was a very positive experience, saw some incredible bands such as Arcade Fire, Bjork, and the Beastie Boys. Also discovered some new bands, such as Ghostland Observatory (my favorite), Neko Case (apparently has been around for a while), and The Hold Steady. The festival is a 2 day event, we arrived Friday evening and left Monday morning. Instead of going into great detail here is the skinny version of the pros/cons.

Pros

  • Discovered new bands (mentioned above).
  • Great weather, until the wind storm on Sunday night.
  • Quality time with Amy and my brother in-law (check out his blog on the venue).
  • Beautiful scenery

Cons

  • The campground was a 24 hour frat party and your neighbor was less than 12 inches away.
  • The Wild Horse Campground, apparently this is the more luxerious alternative to the dusty grounds at the amphitheatre.
  • $10 beers, $7 meals, and $5 cokes within the amphitheatre.
  • No civilization within miles, except for George (most of the residents appear to resent concert goers).
  • The last night the winds picked up and they had to shut down the main stage for over an hour. The temp dropped ( or felt like) 20 degrees.

Disfunctionally hilarious

All-star cast, which includes Greg Kinnear and Steve Carell, makes one of the best films I’ve seen all year. I highly recommend anyone to see the movie Little Miss Sunshine; it’ll make you cry, laugh, and reminisce at all that makes us human. The movie is just raw humanity at its most dysfunctional. Without ruining the film for those who have yet to see it, it’s about a family and their journey across the United States trying to get their daughter enrolled in a national beauty contest in California. To say the least, the way the family interacts is hilarious and at the same time frighteningly realistic, or at least I’ve witnessed just as messed up families before. A must see.

Post Valentine’s Day

AmelieI truly hope that everyone had a great Valentines Day. I always used to despise, or actually be envious, of those who had a Valentine. (I’m a late bloomer) But as you all know the clouds have lifted and Cupid and the gods have smiled favorably upon me this year, or they finally took pity. Not to get too spoony or sappy, however, I couldn’t be more fortunate than having Amy as my Valentine. (ahhh shucks…)

Anyways, to sum up my day yesterday, it was really quite sweet. Amy had purchased tickets at the beautiful Cascade Theatre in Redding, California for the showing of Amelie. For those who have never seen Amelie, it is a great foreign film and extremely funny. The show was sponsored by JPR. The old theatre was incredible, and there was dessert and great music prior to the show. Oh yeah, and Amy had planned all of this in secret. She picked me up early from work and drove me down there. Yes, I know, she’s the best.

A Pretty Wild Time

The WildersLast night Amy took me out to a great show at the Mojo Rising, a typical pretentious Ashland yuppie hangout, featuring a great blue grass group called The Wilders. Besides the smug feel of the venue, the show was absolutely incredible. Even if you’re not a blue grass fan, The Wilders have so much energy and excitement with their music that you have to at least see them once. Actually, honestly, I have never even heard of the Wilders, but they’ve been around since the early 90s playin mean banjos, steel guitars, and mandolins. The cheeky and crazy personality of this band along with their music will just infect your body to want to jump, hoot, holler and howl. This band is anything but daft.
